| Attempting to install "Pitfall: The Lost Expedition" on my Vista machine
results in "The operating system is not adequate for running Pitfall..."
message. The install disk includes directx 9.0.c - installing that (over
directx 10) didn't have any effect. Any ideas?

Pitfall is not correctly identifying Vista. When a program does version
checking there's a right way, and a wrong way to do it. Pitfall is not doing
it the right way, so it's failing. If the program did it the right way then
it would work on any windows newer than XP.
Right click the setup icon on the CD, choose properties, click
compatibility, click the first checkbox to make the installer run in XP
mode. Press OK, try the setup again.
Good luck. >> Stay informed about: Can't install Pitfall |

How old is Pitfall? Did it install natively on an XP machine or was it
earlier and you used XP's compatibility modes? For Vista, you might try the
other compatibility modes, such as win95, also try the 640x480 and 256 color
options (if its that old) - I've run into several programs that have trouble
with 32bit color.
I find it amazing how the programmers made assumptions. I am working on a
webpage that details how to get all the old Might and Mgic games working and
the installs on those old games were something else:
"This game requires 32mb of memory and you only have 2gb, it may install but
will run slowly"
"This game recommends a processor speed of 166mhz, your processor speed is
2.8, it is recommended that you upgrade before attempting to play this game"
Hope that helps!

I get the same message in all of the compatibility modes, or in 640x480, or
256 color, or run as administrator. The game is 2004 vintage. It ran fine on
my Winxp machine.

Yeah, the installer for Pitfall is checking the Windows version, it's not
seeing XP, it's not seeing 9x or 2K so it's saying, hey you don't have an OS
I can run on.
Find the application compatibility toolkit on the microsoft website, you
have to run the Pitfall setup through ACT, ACT will fool Pitfall into
thinking it's in Windows XP. This is basically a bug, whoever published this
game isn't checking the Windows version as per Microsoft specifications.
Goto the software publishers website, see if they have a workaround first,
if not look for ACT at microsoft.com and as I said... Good luck, ya might
need it.

Thanks so much for all your help. The software maker and publisher seem to
have abandoned support for this game (at least on the pc port), so I'll have
to play with the ACT. >> Stay informed about: Can't install Pitfall |
