You might try installing DX9c from Microsoft. It includes some dll's from
previous DirectX that aren't included in Vista. Although, I thought Doom was
based on OpenGL... Give it a try and let us know.

i got over the DPLAY.dll error by downloading the dll file separately
and putting it in c:\windows\system 32.
but now i have big problems with screen resolution. no matter what size
i have set it to be, or whether it is supposed to be window or full
screen, the game always comes up in full screen as a small narrow
monochrome picture at the edge with flickering around the edge of the
screen. help!
anyone know what it is or how to fix it?

'DLL-files.com - dplay.dll, free download'

download and put the file into the doom2, ultimate doom and final doom
folders Wink and you will be good to play.

Try using DosBOX which is excellent emulator for DOS. What OS are you
running and how are you executing the game? Are you running it in a
compatibility mode?
