Can NOT delete a file from Desktop - Tried Move to boot to

First thanks for the help.
I got to the dos as admin - didnt ask me for cred as I am logged in as the
admin / owner

I can see the file in th dir it is this: 420,352 Untitled - 1.ufo
What should I type next.. I did this:
C:\users\owner\desktop del uleadfoo.bar and then got this:
is not recognized as an internal or ecternal operable program or batch file.

I hope you can help some more..

Also, when I do what you said as public i got to the desktop and did a dir
for *.ufo and nothing.. showed other icons but not that file.
So, I assume that its under and in my Owner/Admin one because when i did the
*.ufo on desktop it finds the file

I just dont know or understand what I need to type. The exact file name is:
untitled - 1.ufo (spaces after d and after -)
So any ideas ?

At the Prompt type:

cd desktop

Press Enter on your keyboard.

Then type:

del Untitled - 1.ufo

Press Enter on your keyboard.

Note: "Untitled - 1.ufo" has to be exactly the name of the file you want to
delete (with the correct placement of spaces in the name), that is, as it is

Thanks Dean... when I do that and I spell it right an I even did a del *1.ufo
and it go right under the last line and all i then see is a flashing _ and
the file is still there and I cant type anything again.. almost like when I
try and del it from desktop and I get a not responding .. I can let it sit
there forever and nothing... The only way to solve it is to close dos and
start over... This is unreal to me and I cant believe I have been at this all
day.. I am getting nuts over it@!

dean-dean is exactly right!! (thanks dude!)

Sorry I didn't make it clearer. When you are in your own Desktop directory,
the command prompt will look like this:

C:\users\owner\desktop>

You type:

del Untitled - 1.ufo

then press Enter. You should get the message "1 file(s) deleted".

If you get a "file not found" error, type this:

del U

and then press the Tab key. The first file starting with U will be listed.
Keep pressing the Tab key until the file name you want is displayed. Then
press the Enter key.

Next, type

exit

and Press Enter, to close the Command Prompt.

Let us know how you get on.

Hmm ... that is bizarre. However I suspect it is because some process has
the file open; you can't delete a file while it is open. Normally you'd get
an error message saying "another application has this file open" or similar,
but anyway ...

Okay I think your best bet is to boot Vista into "Safe Mode". This is a way
of running Vista with the absolute minimum of applications, drivers and
services running. If any background apps are interfering with deleting the
file, they won't be active while you are in Safe Mode.

Here's what you need to do:

- reboot the machine
- as soon as the first BIOS screen starts to clear, pres and hold down the
F8 key.
- you will be shown a boot menu, white writing on black screen, options like
Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, Safe Mode with Command Prompt etc.
- choose the first option, Safe Mode.
- the machine will continue booting and come to the login screen
- log in
- try to delete the file from the desktop, using the normal graphical
method. Hopefully in Safe Mode, it can be deleted okay.
- if you can't delete it via the GUI, repeat the steps to go to a command
prompt and delete it that way.
- when finished, restart the machine to end Safe Mode, and allow it to boot
normally.

If by any slim chance, it cannot be deleted in Safe Mode ... well, let's
cross that bridge when we come to it.

Try safe mode and let us know what happens. If my instructions aren't clear
let me know.

Normally at this time this laptop would be through the window, in the yard
and with a axe through it - however, its under 3 months old - WTHell is with
this file!
I started it in safe mode (did that b 4 but didnt try through dos to delete
it)
Got to exactly where I needed to be where I found the file, I type the del
and the file name.. the _ blinks under that line and hangs up there and
nothing - File is still there smiling at us!
i AM 100% LOST and really cant imagine what is making this stay.

Geez ... yeah, well that is getting quite bizarre! You are right to be
frustrated. But although it's annoying, the file isn't actually causing any
loss of availability, right? So I'd hold off from putting an axe through the
laptop, until the machine actually stops functioning

Next things I'd try:

1) go to a Command Prompt (in safe or normal mode, doesn't matter) and type
in this command:

chkdsk /f /v

and press <enter>. This will schedule chkdsk ("Check Disk") to run the next
time you reboot. This will repair any errors in the file system - if the
file had a corrupted entry in the NTFS tables, that might prevent it from
being deleted. Reboot, chkdsk runs as the machine boots up, watch for any
error messages, and then log in and try to delete the file again.

2) If the file still won't get deleted, we'll need to know more about the
application which created it. Which Ulead app(s) in particular, do you have
installed on your machine? eg Photo Impact, Photo Explorer, Media Studio,
Cool 360, etc. Get the exact version number, if you can (usually in Help,
About)

3) Type these commands at a command Prompt and tell me what they return

assoc .ufo

and

ftype <assoc>

where "<assoc>" is the info to the right of the "=" equals sign, returned by
assoc.

For example, it I do:

C:\>assoc .txt

I get ...

.txt=txtfile

So I plug in the "txtfile" to the ftype command:

C:\>ftype txtfile

and it returns:

txtfile=%SystemRoot%\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1

This tells me TXT files are opened by Notepad on my system. The aim here is
to see what type of file Vista thinks the *.UFO file is. Maybe there's some
weird association, which is preventing it from being deleted. Note the full
stop "." before the extension, in the assoc command; otherwise you'll get a
"File association not found for extension ufo" error.

I hope you can hang in there a bit longer, I'm sure we'll be able to delete
this bugger somehow!!

Hey bud... Well that didnt work so I gave in...
I ended Up unistalling all my Ulead programs... I had to turn off admin
issues, I would start to uninstall it would get hug up on a file... I would
then have to reboot and then go into dos and get id of that file and then add
/ remove and start again.. Well after 6 restarts - THE FILE WAS ABLE TO GO!

That suggests there was some Ulead process running in the background, which
was keeping a permanent handle open on the file. Normally such processes
would have been knocked out by running in safe mode. But teh Ulead app must
have got itself loaded in some nefarious way, so it was able to hang onto
the file.

Hi I have exactly the same problem. I recently unfortunately bought a laptop
which could be preloaded only with Win Vista. I tried both PI 5 and PI 12.
When I move my cursor over a UFO file, the program hangs. When I try to
delete it takes forever to delete

I don't think it's a PI 5 or PI 12 problem. My PI 5 was working perfectly
when I was with Win XP.

This is driving me nuts too.

If you have any head way in this, please advise.
