Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>mail (more info?)

When I upgraded from Windows XP Media Edition to Vista Ultimate (Upgrade -
not a clean install), I lost one of my mail groups during the import from
Outlook Express to Windows Mail.

I checked out help on how to create a group, and the instructions provided
to not correspond to the menues offered in Windows Mail when in the contacts
screen.

In order to find the instructions I found. Click on the question mark in
Contacts and type in the keywords: create contact group mailing list. Select
#1 Creat contact groups (mailing lists).

Item #2 does not exist on my screen (New Contact Group).

Also, when I try to right click on an existing group, in order to copy it so
that I can rename and modify it in order to try to get around the creation
step, Windows Explorer crashes and needs to restart.

So what am I doing wrong?

Right-click on the background of the Contacts folder & select 'Customize
this folder...'. Make sure the template selected is 'Contacts'

This was the problem. Thanks. The template was set to Document rather than
Contact. Once I selected Contact, the New Contact Group appeared. Thank You.

Many Thanks to Keith Miller for that very simple solution to a problem that
has bugged me for an hour so! I dont know how the Customise selection was
changed to Documents because I was able to set up a couple of Contact Groups
about a month ago. Any ideas?

Ciao

The 'contacts' is on my tool bar and right clicking gets me to customize and
I have 'contacts' selected but still no 'new contact group' choice. What's
different about mine?

Try this route:

Click Start, Run and type %userprofile%
Press {ENTER}

Right-click "Contacts", choose Properties, then Customize
Select "Contacts". Click Apply, OK.

Open the Contacts folder now.

In my contacts window I choose "new contact group," get a window and name
the group and it looks great. However, when I choose the members for the
group the contacts screen, in list form, always returns to the start of the
alphabet. This is just SO frustrating! I was very familiar with
groups/distribution lists before when using earlier versions of Windows. Why
on earth did MS mess with what was working so well in OE in earlier versions
where it was a simple process?

I have tried for the past hour to make this work and finally got the group
created for the first half of the alphabet (44 members) but cannot continue
this rdiculously slow process through the second half because the screens
keep reverting.

Second problem is that it's hard to find the group once it's created. It
isn't listed in the regular contacts list.

Did you ever get any help with your incredibly frustrating problem? I've
just been going through the same thing for over an hour. The help menu says
that there should be a button to click titled "Select Members" but I have no
such button. I have to add them one at a time and then the list reverts to
the beginning of the alphabet, just as you said. Pleeeease share any help
you received. Thank you!!

I found something that works. Just hold down the "Ctrl" key when selecting
contacts to add to your group, and then add them all at once. It works!

One way around this is to go through the Contacts list and holding down the
Control key when you select those names you want to include in the group.
When you've finished selecting all the names you click on the Add button and
all the names you've selected will be added to the group. Using this method
you only have to pass through the Contacts list once, but don't forget to
hold down the Ctrl button otherwise you'll lose all the previously selected
names. If you have lots of names you might want to do this in chunks, just
in case . . .

After about an hour fussing with this information; It finally came clear.
This information needs to be added in windows help? Isn't this something
that one of the first versions of window's mail didn't address. I have been
a computer user all of my adult life, and this was a very frustrating
experiance, thanks for the help!!
