I am unable to connect to the internet. Our other wireless units are working
fine. This is the only one on Vista and it allows us to get on the IM but
does not connect to the internet through the browser. I need help please. If
this just a Vista issue or what?

Have you ever been able to connect through the browser in Vista on this
machine or has this always been an issue?

Okay, so it's not a problem that has been there since installation or since
you purchased the PC but is happening randomly.

The next time it happens, on the Start Menu, go to All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools and click Internet Explorer (No Add-ons)
and see if the browser then connects. If yes, this is likely tied to a
browser add-on. The next time the problem appears, you need to disable
add-ons one by one until you find the one that is randomly blocking access.

To disable add-ons, I'm assuming you are using Internet Explorer as your
browser, go to Control Panel, open Internet Options, go to the Programs tab,
click Manage Add-ons, then disable them one by one, checking to see if the
browser will than connect after each one until you find the add-on causing
the problem.

Thank you Michael. We are using Internet Explorer. Do you think we need to
disable the automatic updates since this occured after receiving the update
this morning?

You're welcome.

Well, there were security updates in the last couple of days that might be a
source of the issue but I'm dubious. I usually set auto-update to "Let me
choose which updates" but that’s primarily to allow me to make the choice
not to install an update if I hear there were problems with it. If such
problems exist, you usually see it show up in these newsgroups pretty
fast.Smile

Also, it's not customary for Microsoft to push an update that is a browser
add-on. Those usually have to be installed by user choice so I'd start with
the add-ons as I previously suggested.

Post subject: wireless internet connectivity problems with Vista [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

My system uses Vista and a wireless internet. Usually I have no problem opening web pages using IE and Mozilla. BUT Periodically (I'd say 4 times a day), I am suddenly unable to open any web pages using either browser, but I am still connected to the internet, and have no problem with Skype, AOL IM, MSN Messenger, and other softwares.

Is anyone else suffering from this problem? Is there a fix to it? Your comments are highly appreciated...

I don't think it has anything to do with the wireless or Vista. I have been
using wireless a lot here lately. Once in a blue Moon, I 'll get a Web page
cannot be displayed on a Web site I just visited, only to have the page show
if I do a refresh. I have had it happen on dialup too. You should use a wire
connection and see what happens. Myself, I just look at as a possible glitch
with the ISP.

this happens to me almost everyday. Netiher web browser(ff or IE) will
connect, but IM or yahoo will. Sometimes, only utorrent will work and
nothing else will. I am 100% wireless. The only thing that seems to work
is if I power-cycle the router. As for my home network, nothing fancy,
dynamic IPs and a low-end router. I will continue scouring message board
until I find a common issue causing this....

Hey, dont know if this problem is still around, but I'm having the same
problem..
Can connect to YIM and MSN no problem, cant connect to Firefox, IE,
Chrome and Safari and (oddly) occasionally Opera telling me either the
firewall is blocking it or 'Connection Interrupted'. Attempted
everything posted here like disabling antivirus, firewalls, resetting
Vista's Winsock thing and reinstalled and reset my TCP/IP but still with
no luck. Can anyone help?

My problem was the router itself. Time Warner supplied a combo wireless
router/cable modem to customers for a short time. It was a Netgear, not
sure about the model, but im guessing a WGR614. Very poor quality.
Anyway, used a diffrent cable model and router, everything is flawless
now.

I'm not sure its the router. I live with a load of students and all of
their computers are working fine, and so is my second laptop. Its just
singled out the one with the problem

Post subject: Browser not using internet access [Login to view extended thread Info.]
Archived from groups: per prev. post (more info?)

I'm have the exact same issue listed just above. My computer will connect to my home network just fine. It will allow me to log into MSN Messenger Live, and check e-mail through the little mini-browser window, but when I go to open IE or Firefox it says unable to access internet. If I diagnose the problem with my network, it says I am already connected to the internet. I'm getting "Local and Internet" in the bottom right hand corner. I've gone through the list of what to have checked and not checked from proxy servers to enabling the wireless hardware to operate regardless of power setting. I was thinking it was maybe a hardware issue until I was able to use MSN Messenger just fine.

Unrelated (maybe) but potentially helpful diagnostically... I travel a lot and use hotel wireless for work. On the last one I couldn't "find" the wireless network that was being broadcast on my laptop, even though I could find it on my smart phone and my iPod. I've had problems in the past trying to log into some wireless connections that were unsecured, but in the meantime have been able to connect to my home internet throughout my ownership of the laptop until just recently, right after I got home from this trip where I was not able to find the hotel wireless connection. Any ideas would be very helpful
