I am running Vista Home Premium. When I set up my Media Player Library it
created duplicate and a few triplicates of each song. When playing an album
it plays all the sounds including the duplicates. Has anyone seen this and
have any ideas on a solution. I know I could delete them but that would take
a very long with so many songs.

Thank,

Joel

It is likely that you have multiple copies of your files on your hard drive
or that those files are accessible through multiple reparse points in your
file system.

The best solution is to open WMP in the Songs view. Right-click on any
column header and select Choose Columns. Add the File Path column to the
view. Click on the File Path column header to sort by file path. Now you
can see which entries are the desired set and which are duplicates.

Select all of the duplicates by using your favorite multi-select method and
right-click and delete them. Do NOT tell WMP to delete them from your
computer as well. If the files are duplicated by a reparse point, you could
end up deleting both the duplicate library pointer to the file and the
original file as well!

If you think their are undesired duplicates on your computer, use Windows
Explorer to delete them but if you're unsure, test by making a copy of a
couple files to a safe location first and delete those couple of files and
test in WMP.

Dale,

You were right on the money. I had a back up on two other drives and it
pulled the songs from all the drives. That's why I had the duplicates. I will
not be able to fix it.

Thanks,

Joel

It can be fixed. Just follow the directions I gave. If you only delete the
tracks from the library but not from your disk, then you will only have one
copy in the library. If you add the File Path column and sort by it, you
will see what I mean, I think.

I am having problems along this same line. Unfortunately I was not able
to follow the instructions.
I am running Vista Hm. Pr. 32, WMP 11, recently reformated to HP
factory specs, all ok.
I have duplicate files of nearly all songs from the Public/Music file
and from a portable back-up HD using Sync Toy, I now understand I
created this problem. I want to tell WMP NOT to create duplicates. Need
to learn.

The files I want to delete are in H:\ dr.
I cannot select them auto. If there is a way I do not know it. (Cntrl +
A is the only auto I know of)
I cannot follow the path: C:\ User\Mark\local\Microsoft\Media Player
because this does not exist. There is no "local".
I have deleted the entire library twice, shutdown the program,.
restart and they are still there. H Dr not connected. I have the music
saved in Public\Music & on several HD.
I want to learn what I am doing wrong.
Help?
