Apologies if this question's already been resolved. From what I see, it
hasn't
I frequently listen to radio over the web, and catch up on some videos on
You Tube, etc. A wide range of audio sources. I wanted to record anything
that I could hear. I had the audio software, but Vista wasn't configured to
enable that kind of source.
This is how. You don't need to download software, converters, podcasts,
videos,anything.
Your audio hardware should have a setting which allows anything you hear
over the speakers to be recorded.
That's what you need to have enabled. AFAIK all Vista machines will have
the same setting as on mine: "Stereo Mix".
If you do not have that as a recording option, it is simple to add it.
Control Panel > Sound > select Recording tab.
You should see Stereo Mix as a device. If you do, skip the next three
lines and go to the ** line
If you do NOT see Stereo Mix as a Recording Device:
Right-click anywhere in the white area of the device listings.
Check the options for "Show Disabled Devices". You should see Stereo Mix
appear.
** Left click on Stereo Mix to highlight it.
Click on Properties.
See Device Usages at the bottom of the panel .. change the setting to "Use
this device (enable)".
Repeat click on OK, OK, OK etc to get out of the Sound tab and exit the
control panel.
That worked for me, and did not require any downloads of anything. I record
using a range of software including Sonar and Cool Edit. All the options
work for me.
The only caveat is that any sounds you have enabled, such as Windows sounds,
etc etc, will be recorded along with the audio you actually want to record.
You'll have to silence those other sources if you don't want them.
