Why so complicated? Sharing files on a local (non-business) residential
network (3 WindowsXP Pro machines and 1 Vista machine) in Vista is so
unnecessarily complicated. The Vista machine can access files on the XP
machines but not the other way around. I feel like I am back running Linux,
even Linux distroshave simplified things.

PLEASE MAKE FILE SHARING ON A LOCAL (NON-BUSINESS) RESIDENTIAL NETWORK LESS
COMPLICATED!

Chris,

Yes I do and it is the same on all four computers, that is what is so
baffling. I have even used computer management and allowed "Everyone" access
to the computer. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Chris and USCMatt,

I may have missed the beginning part of your thread, but maybe you've
encountered a similar problem, and perhaps have found a workaround:

If a file residing on my Vista machine is opened across my network for
editing on an XP machine, the file is opened only as "Read Only." Is there a
way to allow the remote XP machine to edit an re-save that file, i.e., to
remove the read-only restriction when the Vista file is opened by the
networked XP machine.

(I simply need to allow my secretary using an XP machine to edit are re-save
a draft of a Word document I've created as a draft, the file residing on my
Vista machine.)

All permissions are set open, as far as I can tell.

Thanks very much!

I would welcome any help from anybody at all for this absurd restriction
or deficiency in the Vista operating system.

I am perfectly happy for this situation to be discussed publicly.
