Windows Mail is a pile of ****. For me it is the final nail in the coffin of
Vista. It is the worst betrayal that MS has ever perpetrated on its customer
base. Yes, worse even than ActiveSync. I am moving to THUNDERBIRD and I
recommend everybody to do the same

I imaged the disk that my WM message store was stored on. The image is
perfect. Nothing else has any problems with it except WM which says "The
message store has been corrupted by an application external to Windows Mail.
Windows mail has been able to successfully recover from this corruption
(0x00000000)". WM has in fact lost some four years of email messages,
randomly placing perhaps 15% of the total in recovered mail folders.

I tried with considerable scepticism upgrading to WLM. Another pile of
****! After an installation process more akin to a major graphics or video
processing package asking it to start just results in a "Please wait while
WLM configures itself" and then noithing. WM is still installed. Trying to
start WLM again, and after a re-start, enters the same loop.

WM, WLM and Vista are a disaster. Regrettably for me and MS I am a
technology journalist so I cannot dispose of it entirely but I shall do all I
can to expose these incompetent and dangerous products for what they are.
Bill should be paying me compensation and millions of others for our wasted
time and lost data.

Move to THUNDERBIRD!!!!

Be sure to uninstall any antivirus programs from Norton or McAfee, or a
recent one from Trend, since they often cause such problems, although
seldom immediately. Any replacement antivirus program, such as avast!,
should be installed as a custom install that tells it to leave out the part
that scans email.

I use AVG and Spyware Doctor with Anti Virus. In any case, these are just
excuses for incompetent and useless software

AVG also needs the custom install to leave out the part that scans email.

I haven't heard of problems from Spyware Doctor.

In spite of the bad luck you had, the fact remains that millions of people
use WM and WLM successfully every day (myself included).
These email programs are quite trouble-free when set up correctly and
used with compatible antivirus programs.

Hi Gary, WM seems OK most of the time, but I too have had a few problems
regarding error message "another instance of winmail.exe is running and
failed to initialise MSOE****.dll (sorry can't recall the exact file). A
reboot solves the issue and I get a message saying that 'corrupted mail file
has been recovered'.

Is this a problem linked to my antivirus software (Panda Antivirus 2007)?

Thanks in advance
Steve

I don't know if it could be linked to Panda. The only way to find
out for sure is to uninstall Panda, reboot, then try Windows Mail
again. If there's no improvement, you might as well reinstall Panda.

Since it appears that Microsoft will not be releasing any more fixes
for Windows Mail, you might as well get on the bandwagon and
upgrade to Windows Live Mail:

Hi, I have Vista and have been having serious problems with it for the past 2
weeks. I've tried everything that has been posted in this forum, including
uninstalling McAfee, deleting the MS Message Store (which did get my e-mails
back into WM) and downloading WLM. When I downloaded WLM, only the older
e-mails appears, so I actually went back to using WM since all of the e-mails
went back there, plus I think WM is more user-friendly. So here it is a week
later and I'm still having the same problem again. In addition to the error
message "The message store has been corrupted by an condition external to
WM...:" I also get an error message stating that I'm running a beta version
which Microsoft no longer supports (or something like that), so it suggests
that I upgrade my Vista (which I've only had a year). They want me to PAY to
upgrade! PLEASE HELP!

After you uninstall McAfee, be sure to use their special removal tool:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/McAfee_Consumer_Product_Removal_Tool_d5420.html

Message store corruption in Windows Mail is difficult to solve unless
you're willing to do some major surgery. See
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/62560-windows-mail-problems.html
and read the section "How to Backup and Reset Windows Mail".

In lieu of the above, I recommend switching to WLM, which I see you have
already done. I don't understand what you mean by "only the older e-mails
appears." So WLM is not downloading new emails? What happens when
you use it to check your mail? Any error message?

Thanks, I'll try your suggestions. No error messages when I open WLM. But
all e-mails are dated 3/22/08 and older. The newest e-mails are coming to
WM, which is set as my default mailbox. Should I set WLM as my default
mailbox? If I do, will the new e-mails start to come into WLM? Also, with
WLM, is it possible to have all e-mails come to the same inbox (like with my
WM)? With WLM, the inboxes are separated. Thanks. (Trying to deal with
Vista, but they don't make it easy...)

You can easily fix it so that both programs get all emails.
What is happening now is that Windows Mail is downloading and
removing the messages from the server before WLM has a chance
to get those same new messages. In Windows Mail, go to
Tools, Accounts, select the mail account, Properties, Advanced.
Near the bottom, select the option "Leave a copy of messages on
server." Also select one (or both) of the two 'remove' options.
Do this for every mail account.
Also check this setting in WLM, although I think it's default setting
is what you want. It is not necessary to make WLM your default
email program. I run both programs side-by-side all the time.

As for the multiple Inboxes in WLM, I agree that if you have more
than 2 or 3 accounts it gets to look very cluttered. My workaround
is as follows. Collapse all the account folders to one line each.
Then right-click on "Quick views", then "Select quick views..."
and you can have your choice of combined boxes, such as
"All Inbox". Then do all your work using Quick view folders only.
