I'm not sure what you mean by no email attachments coming through. Windows
Mail will download any attachment. If they are not downloading then
something besides Windows Mail is blocking them. It is possible for an ISP
to do this but more often it is an anti-virus scanning email. If the
attachment is downloading but not opening, can you save it to your hard
drive and optn it from there?

Frank
The email text appears as normal but there is no paper-clip icon to indicate
an attachment even though I know one was attached & sent. I can send emails
with attachments OK so it is only incoming attachments that do not appear.
I'll ask my incoming email people if it could be their server.

Frank, I got my husband to use my email account on his laptop (MS XP /
Outlook) and the test email came through with the attachment included i.e. it
worked normally. Meanwhhile, I've put a note out to my email host company
like you suggested.

While looking at the message press Ctrl-F3. One of the parts of the message
will have content
Content Type: ms-tnef
as part of the header for that part. That means it was sent from Outlook
using RTF. This can ONLY be translated by Outlook or another Exchange
program. Not Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail Desktop,
Eudora, or any other mail program I've heard of.

Hi All.
I amnew to all this so please bear with me if I am not doing it right!.
I was having this same problem (not been able to receive certain
attachments) and I did what Giselle suggested as below - the email sender (
I sent myself and email from my desktop ) opened a new Mail Message (in their
Outlook) and typed in my email address, then highlighted it and right-clicked
to select Properties. Then changed the Internet Format from Send using
Outlook Rich Text Format to "Let Outlook decide the best sending format".
And I was able to receive the file on my Laptop.
Surely, I should not have to do this every time? And it would be a lot of
mucking around to get everyone to send me an email this way?
Is there a setting I can change on my lpatop (which is Vista Premium using
Windows Mail), so that it receives ALL attachments, no matter how they are
sent? or Would I be better off installing Microsoft Outlook and using that
as my Email Programme?
Any help would be appreciated.

It is unfortunate that Outlook often sends attachments in an RTF
format which no other email client can understand. This is not
just a Windows Mail weakness. If you have a need to handle
these incoming non-standard Outlook attachments then you
have no choice but to install Outlook.

Hi Gary
Thanks for the response.
Can I set the default on my outlook (which is on my desktop) so it
automatically sends emails using the option "Let Outlook decide the best
sending format"?
Also - I have alot of trouble opening Adobe Acrobat files (pdf) - any
suggestions?
Thanks

I'm going to pass on most Outlook questions since I don't use it.
Most of the Outlook experts 'hang out' in the newsgroup
microsoft.public.outlook.general.
Is your .pdf question concerning Windows Mail? If so, it is a known
bug that Windows Mail won't open .pdf attachments. You'll have to
save the attachment and then open the saved file.

Gary - is this bug still not fixed (it's December 07 and your note was
posted several months ago). I have a new computer with (Vista) Mail and I've
been trying to send myself pdf files from another computer (that has Outlook
2007). The emails appear in my (Vista) Mail box - but no attachments. (For
what it's worth, I do not use Norton). Is there no fix for this?
Thanks for any help. >> Stay informed about: Blocked Email Attachments |

You're in luck. MVP Ramesh has posted a fix for that problem:

Thanks, Gary. Ramesh's fix appears to be for inability to open pdf's. For
me, the pdf's won't show up as an attachment at all. I can receive other
attachments. I did unclick the Mail option that blocks "unsafe" files.
Very strange!

Strange indeed! I have no clue what could cause that, but you might
try uninstalling your antivirus (temporarily) to see if that makes a difference.

I don't have any solutions for you, I am just another person who has the same
problem. I have a Windows Vista Home Edition and Mail will not display PDF
or JPG attachments I send from another computer. I have already done all the
steps that have been suggested to eliminate this problem. McAfee says that
it is not their problem, that it is Windows Defender. So now I am searching
for something that will let me change some option so that safe files can be
viewed.

Windows Defender is 100% compatible with Windows Mail.
McAfee is not.
